Nelson Mandela Day is more than just a date on the calendar, it's a reminder that each of us has the power to make a difference. Inspired by Madiba's 67 years of public service, South Africans are encouraged to dedicate 67 minutes to uplifting others and strengthening their communities.
For the running community, that means lacing up for more than just fitness. Across Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town, social run clubs and organisations are hosting special Mandela Day events that combine movement, community and giving back.
Whether you're chasing a new personal best, looking for a relaxed social jog or simply want to spend your Saturday making a positive impact, here are five runs worth joining this weekend.
1. RUN SL x Shelflife: 67 Minutes for Change
One of South Africa's favourite community run crews is turning its weekly run into a meaningful Mandela Day initiative.
RUN SL is inviting runners to spend 67 minutes on the move, with Shelflife donating R100 per participant to Siyabonga Africa, an organisation focused on skills development, enterprise support and job creation.
The event is completely free and welcomes runners, joggers and walkers of all abilities. Multiple pace groups ensure everyone can take part, regardless of experience.

2. Mandela Day Community Social Run with Mphatlalatsane Foundation

The morning begins at Stride Haus in Sandton before runners head out on a relaxed 6.7km community run. Afterwards, participants can enjoy coffee and banana bread courtesy of Bootlegger.
Those who pre-register will also stand a chance to win a complimentary gait analysis and R1,000 off a new pair of running shoes.

Runners can choose between several distances, all while dressed in the event's all-black theme.

Participants are invited to bring donations of non-perishable food, blankets, clothes or shoes, with all contributions going to the Imbali Enhle HIV and AIDS Foundation Care Centre in Dobsonville, facilitated by the Gorata Foundation.
Runners can choose from a variety of distances, while walkers are equally welcome to join. Once the run is done, everyone can stick around for coffee and connect with the community.
