For 20 years, Back to the City has been more than a music festival.

It has been a meeting point for hip-hop culture.

Rappers, DJs, producers, graffiti artists, skaters and fans have all found a home at the festival over the years. Now, as Back to the City marks its 20th anniversary, it is preparing for another major celebration in Johannesburg.

The festival returns to Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown on Saturday, 10 October 2026, under the theme Against All Odds.

And this year, the international line-up is giving hip-hop fans plenty of reason to show up.

AB-Soul Is Coming to Jozi

The latest international act confirmed for Back to the City is AB-Soul.

The West Coast rapper has built a career around sharp writing, introspection and making music that does not always follow the obvious formula.

As a member of the Black Hippy collective alongside Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q and Jay Rock, AB-Soul was part of a generation that helped bring a new wave of West Coast hip-hop to the world.

But his music has always stood in its own lane.

From Control System to These Days... and Herbert, AB-Soul has developed a loyal following through his layered approach to rap and his ability to make listeners sit with the music.

For fans who have followed his career over the years, this is one of those performances that cannot be missed.

Detroit Legends Slum Village Are Joining the Celebration

Back to the City is also bringing Detroit to Johannesburg.

Slum Village is one of the most important groups to come out of the city's legendary hip-hop scene.

The group's story is closely connected to T3, Baatin and the late J Dilla, whose influence on hip-hop production continues to be felt across generations.

Slum Village built a catalogue that became essential listening for fans of soulful, sample-driven hip-hop. Tracks like Fall in Love, Tainted, Get Dis Money and Selfish helped cement their place in hip-hop history.

Today, T3 continues carrying the Slum Village legacy alongside producer and longtime collaborator Young RJ.

Their appearance in Johannesburg is particularly significant for fans who understand the impact Detroit and J Dilla's sound have had on producers and artists around the world.

Blu & Exile Bring Their Sound to Johannesburg

Rounding out the international line-up are Blu & Exile.

The Los Angeles rapper and producer duo are best known for their 2007 album Below the Heavens, widely regarded as one of the standout independent hip-hop albums of its era.

Blu's storytelling and Exile's soulful production created a sound that connected deeply with underground hip-hop fans around the world.

Their music represents a particular era of hip-hop where discovering a great project often felt personal.

Before streaming platforms made everything instantly available, albums like Below the Heavens travelled through blogs, recommendations and conversations between people who were genuinely searching for something different.

That makes their appearance at Back to the City feel right at home.

More Than Just the International Acts

While the international line-up is a major part of this year's celebration, Back to the City has never been about one stage or one artist.

The festival brings together different parts of the culture in one space.

This year's edition is expected to feature more than 100 artists and creatives, alongside DJs, MCs, graffiti artists and a range of cultural experiences.

Festivalgoers can also expect MC and DJ battles, skateboarding, basketball, gaming, fashion, food and activations throughout the day.

That is what has kept Back to the City going for two decades.

It has always understood that hip-hop is bigger than the people performing on stage.

Twenty Years of Back to the City

This year's edition carries even more significance.

Back to the City is celebrating its 20th anniversary, while Johannesburg marks 140 years. The festival also comes during the commemoration of 50 years since the June 16 Youth Uprising.

The theme, Against All Odds, connects these moments through the role that young people and culture continue to play in shaping the city and the country.

For Back to the City, reaching 20 years is a milestone.

The festival has seen South African hip-hop evolve through different generations and has continued to create space for both established names and emerging talent.

Twenty years later, the culture is still growing.

And this October, it is coming back to Newtown.
